In what has to qualify as the leader in the clubhouse for this year's political "WTF?!?" award, yesterday Secretary of Treasury John Snow would not rule out the Administration nominating U2 lead singer Bono as the next President of the World Bank.
We'd like to know what's in the water supply over at the Treasury Department that caused this idea to percolate enough so Snow would mention it publicly. Let's hope Secretary Snow got caught somewhat unaware with an off-beat question and this really isn't under consideration by the Administration.
We certainly admire Bono for his part in one of the all-time great rock bands. And, instead of using his celebrity to promote "easy" causes that simply advance his fame, Bono has actually become somewhat of an expert and perceived leader in areas such as economic development in Africa. We hope he continues using his very powerful megaphone to advance this and other important issues.
But President of the World Bank? It'd probably be best that Bono to stick to touring and recording great albums. Then again, does this mean Keith Richard is on the short list for Drug Czar? OK, that's an easy one - anyone want to throw out other good rock star/government job matches?
Snow was being polite to Bono. I saw the interview. Snow said the next president of the WB will be an American, as it always has been, I think. But refused to nominate that person on TV.
This is silly.
