The Governor Race is starting to sift out a little better. Here's the latest...
If Congressman Mark Udall or Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper announced tomorrow, the other would likely back off - and so would the rest of the Democratic field (although we should couch this by saying that Hick would not be afraid to challenge Udall if he felt good about his chances, whereas Udall would certainly not battle Hick). If neither Udall or Hickenlooper decide to run, there will be a likely two-way primary between millionaire Rutt Bridges and former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter. New candidates could always emerge, of course, but this is how it looks today.
On the Republican side, DU President Marc Holtzman remains the only candidate moving forward aggressively. He is already doing polling and focus group-type research and is actively raising money. State Treasurer Mike Coffman is considered in the race as well, but he isn't proactively doing much right now. Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton is the only other Republican being talked about seriously.
Udall had been telling friends and confidants that he would make his decision by Jan. 15, which is this Saturday, but he's made internal deadlines before that he hasn't met. Check back later today as we examine the chances of a Udall candidacy...
