Days since private deadline: 19
Days until public deadline: 0
The 90 days are up. Recall that in November, Representative Udall said he would be taking a look at the Governor’s race over the next 90 days. The 90 day window ended today and apparently Colorado Democrats are no closer to getting a decision from Udall.
In fact, according to a Denver Post story on the formation of Mike Coffman’s exploratory committee, Mark Udall is now saying he won’t make a decision until after the legislature has dealt with the budget crisis. Inexplicable indecision continues to haunt Mark Udall. We’re fairly certain Udall and his staff don’t like this tag and feel it’s somewhat unfair.
Here’s some free advice: if you’re looking to knock down an unfair or negative perception about a candidate in politics, refrain from doing things that feed those perceptions. It goes without saying that Udall's 90 day comment didn’t help in this regard. People were whispering in December that Udall should quit messing around and get in the race if he was serious. But, people were also giving him some slack based on his 90 days comment. Now that the 90 days are up, the slack in that rope just got tugged pretty darn hard.
Indecision scares donors, supporters and voters. And, the insiders and deep pockets get very wary when an experienced politician, who certainly is smart enough to know better, throws around deadlines and fails to meet them.
As we indicated earlier, Representative Udall says he will wait until after the legislature completes its work on the budget crisis before making a decision. That was parroted by other Democrats and seems to be the consensus building among potential donkey candidates.
Well, kids, don’t believe this excuse for a second. There is a very specific reason potential Democratic Candidates are hiding behind the legislature’s work as a reason for not jumping into the Governor’s race. And it has nothing to do with the lofty goal of fixing the monetary crisis.
It’s politics pure and simple. And, Colorado Pols will have the inside scoop on what’s really driving the Dems in this. Stay tuned.
